âFELIPE RIVERA, A NEBULA SPY?â Sailor paced the length of Laniâs veranda. âI cannot believe it.â
Cruz couldnât either. Felipe was a friend. And a good guy. Or so heâd thought.
After the spy had left the laundry compartment, the four of them had hurried back to Laniâs cabin to discuss what had happened.
Lani glanced at Cruz. âYour mystery friend did say, âthe spy is closer than you think.â You canât get much closer than the boy who lives next door.â
âAnd Felipe is into spy gadgets in a big way,â reminded Sailor.
âYouâre sure it was Felipe?â Cruz pressed his roommate. âI mean, if he had on a cap and night-vision goggles, maybeââ
âThese werenât our Academy standard-issue goggles,â broke in Emmett. âI could tell by the shape they were the new OptiTek 5000s. Felipe got them for Christmas. Heâs very protective of them. Wouldnât even let me look at them.â
Even Cruz had to admit that was some pretty good evidence against Felipe. Still, he wanted to be positive. âWe should start feeding him some false information and see if he passes it along to Nebula,â said Cruz.
âWeâre going to the Taj Mahal this weekend,â said Lani. âWe could try some misdirection. You could tell him youâre going to see relatives inâ¦I donât knowâ¦Madagascar?â
Cruz liked that idea. His travel would not be considered unusual. The explorers were allowed to leave the ship occasionally on weekends to visit friends and family. They had to have permission from their parents and Taryn, of course, who required the particulars of where they were headed, who they were staying with, and when theyâd be returning.
âBe sure to say itâs your momâs relatives,â added Emmett. âThatâll really keep Nebula guessing.â
âItâs a good start,â said Sailor with a mischievous grin, âbut turnabout is fair play, too.â
âWhat do you mean?â asked Cruz
âShe means we should spy on the spy,â said Emmett.
âWe could use my acousticks if you want,â said Lani. âWe could hear him from inside my cabin, no problem.â
âI could hack into his OS band and tablet,â volunteered Emmett. He tapped the corner of his glasses. âAnd from our veranda, my magnification feature could come in handy.â
âCracker!â exclaimed Sailor. âThis is going to be great.â
Cruz wasnât so sure. Misdirecting Felipe in order to throw Nebula off their trail was one thing, but snooping into the lives of the other explorers? That was entirely different. Cruz leaned against the rail. He looked out at the silvery blue ocean. A half-moon glowed pale gray in the sky, its reflection on the water lighting a path for Orion to follow. It also lit up the shipâs observatory. Someone had come to stand at the curved window that jutted over the stern. It was Bryndis. The moon must have caught her attention, too.
âCruz?â Lani was next to him. âSomething wrong?â
âI wasâ¦wondering,â he said. âIf we use your acousticks to eavesdrop on Felipe, wonât you hear the conversations of other explorers, too?â
âYeah, I guessâ¦â She lifted a shoulder, as if to say that was the price that had to be paid.
